My visit to Ireland
week 31st May - 5th June 06

This was a lovely week vacation. I travelled by plane to Dublin and then drove to Birr in County Offaly - Mid Ireland.

Interview

While I was there it had been arranged for me to be interviewed for a live Radio Broadcast - Radio Europe from Spain (Costa de Sol) every Wednesday they cover health & beauty issues. The lady who interviewed me, Mary Harboe, was extremely interested in NF, as her son had had an early diagnosis of NF not long ago at a Hospital over there. Great to know that the Spanish medic's can get it right heh!

See information about Mary Harboe

We are hoping to be able to bring you the recording of the interview soon.

The interview lasted 15 miniute's and Mary repeated the web site details about four times. They asked me about losing Lee and how I started the campaigning for NF. She asked me to tell everyone about the every day circumstances that can develop into NF, I was pleased about this, so hopefully all the countires that heard the programme will know the first stages and how NF develops.

Sphagnum Moss

On Friday I went on a Bog Tour at West Offaly Railway at Clonmacnoise - County Offaly a cute little railway carriage took us part way round the 12,000 acrea's of peat land the conducted tour was really interesting and we were told how the peat was dug, removed and took to the main power station for fuel for electricity. Very interesting.

Half way round the site we stopped, we got out to see what shrubs grew on the peat land. In one of the pots she showed us Sphagnum Moss she informed us that in the first world war it had been used for pultis purposes on gangerene.

You can read more about the quality's of this moss on a website:

http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/m/mossph54.html

Relating to the pultis information you need to look for the paragraph begining with 'In civil hospitals' (about halfway down the page) - interesting! my eye's nearly popped out of their sockets. I thought you all would find it interesting too.

So I think you will agree it was quite a productive week.

Take care
