Doreen's visit to Lund for the strepEURO conference.

International Symposium 22-23 May 2006

Global burden of Streptococcal disease and European battle against it - conclusion of StrepEURO project.

  StrepEuro

The Strep-EURO is a research project and surveillance programme for severe group A streptococcal disease (GAS). The aim of the project is to enhance understanding of the epidemiology of GAS invasive disease in Europe.

The conference was extremely positive. Many countries where represented and 3/4 rememberd me and our charity and I felt comforted that I had done the correct thing by going.

Dr Androulla Efstratiou from the Health Protection Agency in Colindale - London gave us stats from most of the Europian countries relating to the global burden of GAS (group a strep) and at the end of their talk she had our charity details up on her power point presentation for all to see.

She explained that we (The 'Lee Spark' NF Foundation.) were a valuable support to all survivors and bereaved. She also mentioned the training DVD and asked me if I wanted to say anything about it, so I spoke for a little while about the DVD and as a result I received orders to go to Cyprus & Sweden.

Necrotising Fasciitis (NF) is notifiable in 4 countries.

Ireland, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

At the moment the powers that be in England say that there are other illnesses that come first in this country, so we will have to be patient and the HPA will inform me when is the right time to apply again.

The red tape I daily go through is horendous - I have to walk at a snales pace all the time. But rest assured there is not one day that I have not done my best for raising awareness.

I/we just have to come to terms that it is a very slow process.
